SATA Cable

Serial ATA, SATA or Serial Advanced Technology Attachment is a computer bus system that transfers data to and from a hard disk or optical drive. SATA was designed to replace the previous ATA or Advanced Technology Attachment. SATA devices and adaptors can send data over a high-speed serial link.

Two revisions to the SATA model are SATA 1.0a and SATA II. SATA 1.0a supports mainly internal connections and carries speeds up to 1.5Mbps. SATA II uses internal connections referred to as eSATA and speeds of 3Mbps. An internal SATA cable connects the motherboard to the hard disk, or you can externally connect a hard drive with a SATA back plate. You can also connect an external drive to an eSATA port, using an eSATA cable, on a controller card.

Because SATA is scalable, it enables enhancements to the computing platform such as faster performance, simpler integration and improved design efficiency. SCSI is faster than SATA but it is also more expensive and requires a separate PCI card for control of the hard drives.
