Serial Cable
A serial cable is used to transfer data to and from connected devices. Serial cables will consist of a number of connectors, from the 9 way D through to the 25 way D connector. D way connectors are so-called because of their shape, which is like the letter D. The RS-232 standard is used for serial cable connectors and the original connector of this type was designed to be a 25-pin connector.
The serial cable is also known as a null modem cable, as it can be used to connect two computers without a modem. Serial cables can also be used to allow a computer and a modem to communicate.
External modems can be connected to a PC or network router using a serial port and serial cable.“Serial” means that information sent in one direction travels along a single wire in the cable. Serial port communications traditionally use the RS-232 standard. More current standards RS-422 and RS-485 allow longer connection distances and are widely used in manufacturing installations and EPOS.
